ACI EUROPE and EUROCONTROL launch climate adaptation taskforce
ACI EUROPE has partnered with EUROCONTROL on the creation of a joint European Aviation Climate Change Adaptation Working Group, under the auspices of the EUROCONTROL Airport Operations Team (AOT).
Whilst climate mitigation remains a key priority for Europe’s airports, notably through Airport Carbon Accreditation, it is increasingly clear that adaptation to climate change is also crucial for airports. With the growing risk of extreme weather events, such as flash floods, violent storms and heat waves, the sector needs to map ways to prepare its infrastructure and operations for these shocks. There is a critical need for Europe’s airports in particular to collectively address current and projected environmental impacts through the application of the principles of sustainability.
The newly created Group will tap into extensive knowledge base of mandated experts on environment, climate change, airport operations and subject-specific technical experts from airport operators with the objective of establishing methodology, companion guidance, peer support and best practices on adapting the European aviation sector to the impacts of climate change. The first meeting of the group took place on 21st September 2022 at the ACI EUROPE Headquarters. The group is co-chaired by EUROCONTROL’s Head of Sustainability, Marilyn Bastin, and ACI EUROPE’s Alexandre de Joybert, Head of Sustainability and Aidan Flanagan, Head of Safety, Capacity, ATM & Single European Sky.
