A digital twin for Milan Bergamo Airport
Milan Bergamo Airport is set to pioneer airport innovation with the launch of the AVIO project, a ground breaking initiative to develop a digital “twin” of the airport. The project, co-funded by Italy’s Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, will improve ground operations using real-time data, simulations, and virtual reality training for staff.
Developed by SACBO – the airport operator – in collaboration with TXT e-tech, SORINT.tek, and the University of Pavia, AVIO will integrate artificial vision systems, IoT (Internet of Things) technologies, and high-performance computing to create a dynamic virtual model of the airport. This model will support operational coordination, enable immersive virtual reality training for staff, and provide valuable insights for improved efficiency, safety, and service levels.
The project reflects a broader vision of digital transformation in aviation, with Milan Bergamo Airport leading the way as a testing ground for smart infrastructure and human-machine collaboration. The digital twin is a tool for modernising airport operations, constituting a key milestone in Italy’s push towards a more connected, sustainable and digitally advanced transport ecosystem.
