10 November set as official date for launch of EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
The European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) will officially start operations on November 10, 2024, as confirmed by EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson. This automated system is set to modernise border management across the Schengen space, replacing the current manual passport stamping process.
The EES will impact approximately 700 million travellers annually, registering details such as their name, travel document type, biometric data (fingerprints and facial images), and the dates and locations of their entry and exit from the EU. The EES will store third-country national’s data in a secure database for three years, eliminating the need for re-registration during multiple trips to the EU.
The aviation industry is fully behind the roll out of EES and is committed to working with the European Commission and the Member States on a number of pressing challenges that still require urgent attention and coordinated action. This includes providing the resources to ensure a full technical and operational readiness at all border crossing points and mitigating the impact on passenger processing time at the border and on operations.
